From my BeerBods selection. I really like dark lagers. Their rarity compared to the ubiquity of lighter lagers in the UK leads to an air of mystery and excitement which always leaves me intrigued. So I was very excited when I opened this Munich Dunkel called Ferrous Red by 71 Brewing.
Founded in 2017 and based in Dundee. 71 Brewing claim to be the “Engineers of Beers” by bringing in expertise to produce a very precise, consistent, and good quality product. The water in the Dundee area is apparently very similar in makeup to the Pilsen area of the Czech Republic, so it is no surprise that 3 out of the 4 beers this brewery produces are lagers.
The beer poured with an off-white to light brown head that disappeared pretty quickly. It looked fantastic with a completely clear, brilliant deep red ruby colouring, it certainly lived up to its name.
The aroma was of a malty sweetness with toffee, and a very light hint of floral hops. The flavour was smooth and sweet, the balance was heavily towards the malts rather than hops, with toffee, dark fruits such as berries and cherries, and a breadiness.
The beer had a mid-length finish, quite dry and with slowly increasing, but not excessive bitterness. There was a mid-level of carbonation and the beer was medium bodied with a good mouth feel.
I loved this beer, it maintained the crisp smoothness of a lager, but with the added depth and flavour of the darker malts, I would definitely have this again.
An excellent Munich Dunkel style beer, clean and crisp but with the added depth of darker malts.
